I watched a little of the opening to the Games. It was loud, proud and bombastic - as everything from China strives to be these days. For some reason, I was filled with dread while watching the grandeur of the Opening really! China was sending out a message to the world about their greatness but other nations will undoubtedly read it as a "threat", a "warning", etc. Even our local papers called it China's "Sputnik Moment" - a glib reference to Russia's race to the stars rivalling the US [and we all know how that caused strained relations between them for decades].
